GOVERNMENT SET TO TARGET B.C.’S WORST SPEEDERS VICTORIA – As many drivers prepare to hit the road for the last long weekend of the summer, the B.C. government is urging drivers to use caution and warning B.C.’s worst speeders that effective Sept. 20, new impoundment rules come into effect for those travelling 40 km or more over the posted speed limit. |
PUBLIC URGED TO OBEY FIRE EVACUATION ORDERS VICTORIA – Despite cooling temperatures in the province, the forest fire situation in British Columbia remains elevated and people are being urged to follow all evacuation orders by not travelling into areas where orders are still in effect. |
EXTREME WILDFIRE ACTIVITY EXPECTED VICTORIA – British Columbians are being urged to comply with evacuation orders and alerts, and to stay out of the backcountry as high winds are expected to increase aggressive fire behaviour. |
B.C. SEES BIGGEST DROP IN CRIME IN CANADA VICTORIA – The new Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics (CCJS) report on 2009 incidents of police-reported crime show that B.C. has the largest decline in crime rates and crime severity of all the provinces and territories in Canada, but the Province acknowledges that continued, targeted policing is still needed in communities where combatting gangs and guns remains a priority. |
B.C. TO COMPENSATE RESIDENTS AFFECTED BY OLIVER SLIDE OLIVER – The Province is initiating compensation discussions with Oliver-area residents affected by the June 13 debris torrent, Solicitor General Michael de Jong, QC, announced in accepting all 12 recommendations from the deputy solicitor general’s review of the incident. |
